Garrett Chapel's Bell Tower.

 Preservation

  Nature’s elements have conspired
  to threaten the Chapel’s future.
  Seasonal use, steep hillside
  construction, use of unique
  materials have combined for a
  difficult preservation challenge.
  While the Garrett Chapel Trust
  has received recognition from
  the New York State Landmark
Society for its care of this historic
  gem, funding remains the primary
  constraint in ongoing care and
  restoration efforts. Community
  support has been the primary
  vehicle for restoration projects.

Efforts Completed and Planned:

Fundraising events in the mid 1990’s provided funds for an extensive condition report and a long-term restoration plan which is currently underway. Several urgent intervention efforts were undertaken to reduce water damage and address safety concerns. This included restoration of roofing and gutter systems. Funds raised during the 2003 wine tasting helped replace the chapel’s electrical and lightning suppression systems, and work has begun to repair some of the building’s crumbling cast stone work. This year, urgently needed repairs will begin for the beam supporting the bell in the bell tower, as well as first aspects of improving access to the building and up hill water drainage. Future work will include continued masonry repairs throughout the building; upgrades to paths, walkways, and other hazards; efforts to reduce water damage by improving drainage around the building and ventilation in the building; and various other projects to improve the condition and accessibility of the property.
